Monty Schmitt

Senior Project Director, The Nature Conservancy

Monty Schmitt is the Environmental Flows Senior Project Director with The Nature Conservancy’s Water Program in San Francisco. With over two decades of experience, his focus at TNC is on innovating and advancing water resource management science, tools and strategies to meet the water needs of nature and people in a warming climate. Previously, Monty served as a lead scientist and project director with the Natural Resources Defense Council in the historic effort to restore flows and salmon to California’s second largest river, the San Joaquin. Monty is also an expert on state and national flood management issues. In California, he served on Governor Davis’ Taskforce on Floodplain Management in 2001 and has worked with state agencies and regional stakeholders on the development and implementation of the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan.
